codec
Short for coder/decoder. It is the component that processes a video/audio signal for storage and subsequent processing in a computer, and may be implemented as software or hardware. While all codecs perform the same function, they are not equivalent; in order to recreate the video signal for playback to a TV set or video recorder, the coded data must be decoded by the same codec that was used originally. It is an important component of a video capture card.
